WHO CAN HAVE BREAST
RECONSTRUCTION?
Almost any woman who has had a mastectomy is a candidate for breast reconstruction. The timing of the reconstruction is determined by several factors. Those who have early stage breast cancer, are generally in good health are good candidates for immediate reconstruction. Those who will be receiving radiation or have advanced stages are recommended to undergo delayed reconstruction. Advanced age, general health status, and prior surgical or medical treatments may limit the options available. WHAT DOES INSURANCE COVER? The Women's Health and Cancer Act of 1998 entitles a woman with breast cancer to the reconstruction of her choice. It also covers surgery to the opposite breast to match it for symmetry. And lastly, any complications related to these surgeries including lymphedema are covered. Each state has additional provisions to this act of Congress. All insurance companies are aware of this law although sometimes they have to be reminded of it.
